Crazy Little Thing Called Love

For me, an important meaning of Jesus’ "love your neighbor" quote is reflected in the prayer….

"Dear God, fill me with your divine love and move me along a path that connects me with those who will most benefit from receiving it. Be with, live in, work through, and love me as you will"

I like this prayer because it includes ramifications for our own lives beyond what we can imagine, and thus a tangible "faith" element. It exudes a faith that requires us to trust God by risking more than the mere possibility that we will be disappointed by what WE fail to receive. For who will God wish to love through me? And what will God do in me and with me to prepare me for such relationships? Yes, it requires us to risk much, but only in such risks do we find the potential for heavenly rewards.

One way that helps me to think of it all is to imagine a scenario in my teenage years when my brother and I were quarreling. My mother could have said to me, "you must love your brother". I could nod my head but it wouldn’t amount to much more than, "Sure, okay, whatever you say mom". But, what if I could invite my mother’s love for him into my self and accept her hidden hand's guidance as to how best to convey it through a brother-to-brother relationship?

For many years my response to the "love your neighbor" command was one of "sure, whatever you say Jesus, sounds nice….I’ll get right to it". Ultimately, I began to think something might be wrong with me because no matter how much I wanted to be in sync with the command, I did not experience this love that Jesus talked about. The prayer above is one that has helped bring the meaning of this command to life for me. "Being" and "doing" the Gospel now seems less about futile attempts to imitate the perfection of Jesus and more about "becoming" Christ like through God’s movement in our own lives, something that will be expressed differently in everyone. Several terms that once seemed foreign to me now have experiential meaning.

Divine Love = the love God carries for us all and that we may ask to receive into our own beings

Holy Spirit = the hidden hand that guides us and instructs us how best to convey this love

Living Christ = living expressions of God’s use of our unique gifts, circumstances, and experiences to bring His love into the lives of others in ways that serve the others, create communities, and increase our joy

It might be a little scary but, as we avail ourselves to God as instruments of His love for unknown "neighbors", we are moved into experiences that foster our growth and enhance our comprehension of God’s love for ourselves, drawing us closer to God and our neighbors in the process. Here, in the majesty of moments beyond words, is where we begin to experience extended, inclusive neighborhoods as emerging brotherhoods. Here is where we receive glimpses of the Kingdom that infuse us with faith in God's plan for a new world. And here, not over or up there, but in, around, and through us, as God smiles through our goosebumps, and where we just might hear Jesus chuckle, is where this darn "Kingdom thing" comes alive.

Hey everybody, it's toad!!!

Many years ago I adopted the alias 'frogigr' as a username for my first AOL account. At the time, frog gigging was among my favored leisure pursuits with a small group of wayward friends. On occassion, often after enjoying a combination of pops and brown waters, we would head out to a local golf course where we could usually count on bagging enough of the critters to fill up a fry daddy full of legs. I don't know if you have ever tried frog legs, but to me they taste like sweet chicken. Very tasty. Really.

Anyway, the reason for sharing all that was to provide some background information relative to why I would be posting this here picture of a gorgeous looking toad. Well, about six years ago, as I was using my 'frogigr' alias, a certain friend of mine started calling me frog. Some point later I retorted by addressing him as toad. To this day we still have fun with these nicknames and tonight, as I was addressing him as toad in an e-mail, I went in search of a toad picture to paste into the e-mail as a way of 'talkin shit'. When I found the picture of this here critter I laughed so hard that I could not resist the opportunity to save it, and the accompanying explanation, to my blog. So here ya have it.

Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river...

What do I love in the world? Where is God in that?

Through our experiences of the many scenes and characters in an emergent Universe narrative we can, if we look for it, see God winking at us as if to say, "I AM here, the water is just fine, leave the bank, come on in". Over time, the more we encounter such overtures, the more we realize that this living water is not only inviting us to jump in, it is calling us to join it and, as it runs through us, to emerge as participants in its expression. As one who could sit on a hillside for hours just looking at a river, and enjoys floating in a canoe, one thing I love in the world is the conjoined experience of "seeing" the flow of divine currents throughout my city and being ushered along by them at the same time. Where is God in this? God is in my experiences of learning who God IS through this magical combination of observing grace in others, realizing grace in myself, and in the marveling I do in the moments of their interaction.

There Goes Johnny.......

So, what exactly is a "bad ass". It is an important question, for in the context that most American men understand the term, there is nothing we would rather be known as. When we hear it applied to some other fellow we immediately want to know what he has done to earn such a distinction and, if it be within our grasp, a great deal of our attention is devoted to looking for opportunities to qualify for the same attribution. As men, we yearn for few things more than knowledge of other men pointing to us as if to say, "there goes Johnny, what a 'bad a-ss'".

A rare few among us even succeed at attaining that most cherished of all characterizations, that of "TOTAL bad ass", and among those who understand themselves to be regarded as mere "bad asses", their efforts to add this "TOTAL" to their equation can be an all-consuming engagement. To breathe the "rare air" of those who have traveled with the knowledge that they be pointed out by friends, acquaintances, and even casual onlookers as a "TOTAL bad ass" is for many men as good a definition as you will find for their life's pursuit. The search for such an attribution is at the foundation of many a man's quest for high office, his own plane, a fancy vacation house, etc., and all too often a hot young babe other than his wife to carry along on said plane and to shack with in said house. And the most wonderful thing about this combination of "achievements" is the time they provide this fella, with his hot babe, on his private jet, on the way to his fancy house, to experience the actual feeling of being a "bad ass", perhaps even "totally".

Now the question. If you were to travel to and discover a "Heavenly" planet, one on which there was no suffering, social harmony seemed the norm, all children were fed and clothed and schooled, etc., what would be the first thing you would be looking to figure out? Actually, this would be among your first inquiries irrespective of the planet's condition. For the majority of human males, at least those for whom "bad assness" be within reach, the first things they would want to know is where and who the "bad asses" are. "Who do I take my cues from?", is the big question. Once answered, all further engagements with the people of the planet will be guided by attempts to determine what it takes to join the ranks of the planet's "bad a-sses" and then to pursue such ranks and company with all deliberate speed. Assuming you were indeed to stumble on a "Heavenly" planet, however, you would be disappointed to have your inquiries into the identies of the realm's "bad a-sses" met with looks of utter perplexity. "Whatever are you referring to?", these heavenly beings might say, "we have no such creatures here."

Now, and here is where the big question exists relative to man's real opportunities to spread seed in the proverbial cosmos. Assume that you and a few of your "wanna-be bad ass" friends, in your current states, were granted the opportunity to inhabit this heavenly realm. What do you think the first thing you would go about doing, perhaps even unconsciously. Would you bask in the heavenly glow of the experience of a real, beloved community? Uhhhhh, no.

Not even realizing what you were doing, you would set out to change the planet's systems to make room for positions and provisions of rewards that enable the introduction of "bad asses". Similarly, you would create games for the same purpose, to enable the ascendency of your "bad ass" selves in order to experience the highs that arise from the perverse satisafctions of the illuson of superiority. Furthermore, you would tweek the systems and the rules of the games to ensure yourselves advantages relative to opportunities to breathe the "rare air" of that planet. After all this, however, despite your successes at changing the rules of the planet's game, your "achievement" would not be complete. It would not be complete until the young inhabitants of the planet are pointing at you and the newly created "bad asses" from their own species saying, "there go Johnny and the bad asses", all the while thinking to themselves, "and I want to be one too."

Now, getting back to the description of the prevailing conditions that qualified this planet as "heavenly", and assuming Johnny and the boys have gotten control of the reigns, how many generations do you think it will take before things go "all to hell".

A Whole New Ride

The following is a note I wrote recently in response to a question about inviting God into our lives.

The night I invited God in (to my life) I was standing in the 'crows nest' (roof porch) of a beach house. Like you seem to be dealing with now, I experienced a lot of trepidation. I recall actually whimpering to God, "Okay, you can come in, but please don't take away my cold beer and my golf weekends with my buddies". That was one part of my problem, the fear of losses of the things that gave me pleasure and the experiences with friends that I enjoyed and that buoyed my self esteem. The other part of my problem was embarassment over some things, one being that at the time I liked looking at porn magazines.

Well, it is now about 8 years later for me, and things are certainly a lot different. I still enjoy a cold beer from time to time (not to mention a Vodka martini) but I don't get shit faced (drunk). If I showed up for a week in the bahamas to find no alcohol on the island, I'd be cool with that now whereas 8 years ago I'd want back on the plane. I still get inspired by the presence and/or pictures of hot girls, but the idea of looking at porn doesn't appeal to me anymore.

What's the point? Well, for me the point has been that in relationship with the living God I do not necessarily experience as much "pleasure" as I did before, but don't seem to need it. For me, pleasures were typically sought and indulged in as a form of temporary relief from my general dissatisfaction with myself. Now, though not fully satisfied with myself, I really ENJOY myself. Or better yet, I would say that I enjoy God's involvement in myself, sometimes to the point of laughing my ass off. As important, I also get to experience God's enjoyment and appreciation of me. Hard to explain until it starts happening, and its usually pretty subtle, but when it does start happening it is pretty darn cool. Furthermore, as my enjoyments have increased in relations with God, I've started worrying less and less about when/how/where I will get my next pleasure fix.

I'll leave you with this thought. You are not a "crappy person", as you have suggested you sometimes feel about yourself. At worse, you're having some experiences of what you call a "crappy person" in order that you may in turn have experiences of God loving this person, and of the process by which God brings you out of that experience and into the experience of who you really are. This process is the road along which you learn who God really is. Then, rather than saying you love God just because a book instructs you to, you will exude love for God because of what you have experienced of God's love for you.

Calling all Moonbats. Come in Moonbats.

So, ya ever wondered what a moonbat looks like. Personally, it's not something I've lost a lot of sleep over in recent years but for some reason the expression surfaced in some correspondence the other day. Can't say that I've even given a minute's thought to such crittahs until, amidst some friendly bantur, the 'ol moonbat appeared on the tip of my tongue. Not sure how that will change your daily routine but, by golly, upon having the opportunity to gaze upon one's portrait I thought the least I could do is share it. So here ya go, it's Luna Chiropterans Dhimmicus himself. Live. In the flesh. And a barking one at that. If anyone can locate an audio file of this bark I'll send you a free turkey for Thanksgiving.

Life of the Beloved

How do I feel about myself as God’s beloved?

This question was posed to me this week as the subject of a brief paper for a Servant Leadership class. Before answering this question it is important to define my perspective on who the real beloved is, and how I relate to him/her. From there, I can reflect on my experiences of myself as the beloved, or better yet, my experiences of being love. If I am not being and expressing love, then no matter how much I may want to, I will not be able to love myself. If I do not love myself, then I will find it hard to believe and trust in any other’s love for me, including that of God.

The beloved is not me, the person, it is the divine potential (Christ, if you will) that resides with me, waiting to be activated by my choice to enter into a committed relationship with the living God. As I make this choice, God and I enter into a covenant relationship through which “a child is born”. Through this relationship, this pure child of divine love, birthed by the infusion and promptings of the Holy Spirit, emerges into ever-greater regions of my consciousness. The more time I spend with God, and the more responsive I am to Spirit’s leadings, the greater experiences I will have of bringing this child’s LIFE into the world. The more I bring this child’s life into the world, the more I will experience myself as “being love”, and thus the more I will experience being loved by God.

In this context, I can now relay experiences of my life that allow me to reflect on how I feel as God’s beloved, starting with memories of my adolescence. Three experiences that come to mind now are those of watching the movie, “The Sound of Music”, reading the book, “The Diary of Anne Frank”, and looking at pictures of dogs and fire hoses unleashed on civil-rights marchers, children included, in Alabama. Despite whatever hardness had begun to envelope me by that time, I was able to view the events depicted through the lens of innocence and was moved to experiences of a terrible inner grief. In the case of “The Sound of Music”, I remember being on the couch of our living room, straining to hold back my tears in the presence of my parents. With “Anne Frank” and the civil-rights marchers, I was alone in my room, and was overtaken by prolonged sobbing. In these moments of being put in touch with God’s heart, though I had not yet made the choice to commit to this presence, and did not know what to call it, I experienced my first connections with the beloved. Also, as painful as these moments were, I recall that in the process of being put in touch with someone/something deep inside me that cared so much, I experienced a love of myself for my ability to feel that way.

For me, such experiences of this “connection” continued through my high-school years, most often surfacing while doing research and writing papers on the subjects of slavery and race relations in America’s South. I can remember weeping silently while reading Pat Conroy’s descriptions of brutal acts of racism in his book “Lords of Discipline”, “The Great Santini”, and “The Prince of Tides”. I recall sobbing uncontrollably in my boarding-school dorm room in the process of writing a 10-page paper entitled, “The History of Lynching in the Southeast”. Though I did not have a spiritual perspective at the time, and did not recognize a connection between the experiences and God, I can now look back on such moments as ones in which I experienced the aching of someone/something greater than just my own human heart. But why did such aching have to take place? And what could I possibly do about it?

While each of these questions has been important to the evolution of my relationship with God, the first question is better left for another discussion. The second question, however, points directly to how I feel as God’s beloved today. Though given moments of connection with my beloved presence as a teenager, it was not until my early 30’s that I was re-introduced to it in ways that amounted to a call to give greater life to it. Over a period of months that included multiple episodes of a heart greater than any human could carry alone, memories of my teenage “connection” experiences flooded in. As they poured in, though first surfacing as memories, they grew into instructions about who I really am. Next, or so it seems as I reflect on it all now, these instructions evolved into an awareness, and the awareness was accompanied by an invitation, and the invitation grew into a challenge…….a challenge to move beyond mere connection with this beloved presence, to acknowledge it as myself and to bring it forth boldly into the world.

How do I feel about myself as God’s beloved? Well, in response to God’s invitation and challenge of me I in turn invite God every day to be with, live in, work through, and love me as God wills. Out of this choice, I experience God’s love for me as well as many privileged opportunities to be and express God’s love in the world. As I have more and more experiences of embodying God’s beloved and begotten Son in me, it feels good.

Welcome to Nebadon

Date: Circa 2004

Attention to: Michael Lerner, Karol (Pope John Paul II), Binnie (Osama Bin Laden), Mullah Omar, World Leaders

From: Big Possum, Local Universe Creator Son

Bin, Mullah, I thought I would draw you two into this conversation for a couple of reasons. One is that I think the following information is particularly worthy of your consideration. Another is that all of you being addressed here are voracious readers and thus likely to be particularly receptive to and appreciative of my ensuing points. Finally, by addressing a Jewish Rabeye, a Catholic Pope, and Islamic Extremists in the same note I hope to further convey the reality that I view all of you as "actors" sharing equal responsibility for pulling yourselves (if the description applies) and others out of "destructive" roles. Furthermore, though viewing your temporal personages as "actors", whenever I address people the beings I AM truly attempting to "reach" are the aspects of spiritual consciousness behind the masks of temporal identities. On this level you are all of equal value in my eyes and should be in each others' as well.

As voracious readers who seek wisdom in the printed word I would like each of you to imagine something. Imagine arriving on a distant planet that ALWAYS existed in a state of harmony. Sure, beings have their disagreements from time-to-time but there have never been any wars, the word "oppress" is not in their dictionary, and the concept of "terrorism" is beyond the reach of their imagination. Imagine further that they have had no contact with any civilizations outside their own. Now, as voracious readers new to this planet one of the first things each of you might be inclined to do is seek a library. Sounds reasonable enough but here is the question. How big do you think the library is going to be? What kind of books will it contain? Is "literature" in this civilizations dictionary? If so, and you are able to locate examples of this literature, how rich will it be?

Now, let us assume that after finding yourselves rather unfulfilled with your experience of this harmonious planet's library you decide you would like to check out some other aspect of its "culture". Perhaps you would seek out an Art Museum. Sounds reasonable enough. Okay, using your own imagination tell me what kind of art you would expect to find there? Into what depths would you expect paintings to draw you? What emotions would you expect them to reflect? Would any of them be worthy of a group's critique? What would be critiqued? What would different colors and contrasts between shade and light represent? If you were to discover that the museums paintings did not captivate you then perhaps you would wander on to the section with the marble statues? What historical figures would you expect to see captured in stone? What about them would you expect to be of interest? Perhaps the best question would be to ask how big you think this planet's museum would be or even if you think there would be one at all.

Assuming you have been bored by your experiences of both the planet's library and its museum perhaps you go looking for some stimulation at the local movie theatre. What interests you? Are you in the mood for an "action" flick? What circumstances do you imagine exist on such a planet to create the context for such "action"? How about a good comedy? Certainly it should be interesting to discover what these "harmonious" beings define as "humor". What do you think the likelihood is that you will laugh? Perhaps a good "romance" would be more to your liking? What kinds of trials and tribulations would you expect the star couple to experience before the final scene in which they meet breathlessly in a passionate embrace? Perhaps a better question would be to ask whether or not "passion" is even in this planet's dictionary or at least how these beings would define it. Not seeing much of interest in the romance films showing maybe you think about "science fiction". Ahhhh, this, or so you reason, should be a realm of interest as such films are imagination based and thus not hindered by "reality". Is that so? It is my experience that science fiction films on earth are little more than thematic dramas played out in advanced technology settings. On this planet you are visiting, therefore, if the dramatic themes themselves are beyond the imagination of the films' creators then how much interest do YOU imagine their imaginations of future technology will hold?

Okay, maybe the movie theatre was not such a good idea. Where to next? You tell me.

So, what is the point here. Well, to some extent all of you will have to discern the most instructive points for yourselves but here is what I will suggest to you. For simplification purposes let us focus on the example of the library. Assuming you VALUE literature, history, etc. as a source of wisdom and general reading pleasure, assuming by extension that the bigger the library and the greater the breadth and depth of the material in it the better, let us think for a second about how you CREATE it. One option is to enable imaginations that produce this library but without any reference in the history of one's own planet, one's own experiences, or an understanding of the experiences of others, the clarity of such imaginations will be limited. Furthermore, and I will pose this first as a question, what is your first reaction to reading a book or watching a movie that has no basis in any reality you are familiar with? Well, for most of you it is to close the book prematurely or walk out of the theatre shaking your head and complaining, "that was NOT REALISTIC". Such books don't draw many readers and such movies don't sell many tickets. Candidly, however, this is the least of a "Creators" worries. The greater problem is that as you enable imaginations the beings exposed will, over time, evolve to shape their reality in accordance with "images" of greatest interest. So, if you start with a "harmonious" planet but enable "wild imaginations" it will only be a matter of time before the planet "goes wild". Where does this leave us? What does earth have to do with it? Well, I will do my very best to explain.

For any civilization or planet that wishes to have a big library there are only a few ways to get it. One is to enable the requisite imagination. Another is to allow the introduction of another civilization with a richer history and a broader/deeper current reality. Either way you run into the problem of the imagination of the harmonious planet "running wild" and inspiring experiences of the same dramatic circumstances humans say they want to evolve beyond. Creatively speaking it is the ultimate conundrum. Think about it. The very things you value most, wisdom and entertainment, seemingly cannot be produced by the condition that is hardest sought, that of social harmony. Consider this for a moment along with the fact that in addition to the mandate to create wisdom and the need to create entertainment to attract "fragments" to One's Universe the greatest of all responsibilities IS to bring beings home by fostering their EXPERIENTIAL knowledge, appreciation, and LOVE of God.

What I AM attempting to do here is convey some things from my perspective that will help people "see" how it is that they could possibly end up in the "experience" of this planet. The challenge now is for you to UNDERSTAND enough about this "Big Picture" to begin behaving in accordance with a reality by which all beings are treated with respect. Similarly, the more you are able to "see" the greater your ability will be to see your own VALUE as well as the VALUE of others in a constructive context. For further elucidation of this VALUE equation let us return to considerations relative to the focal challenge of building a big library.

The goal here is to build as big a library as is achievable, one with as much depth and breadth as possible, for as little suffering as possible. Pursuant to the goal of minimizing suffering the goal is to maximize harmony. Revisiting the dangers to harmony posed by "wild imaginations", the question then, the great challenge, is how to make such a vast library available to all without jeopardizing existing harmonies or reversing the evolution of civilizations moving in harmony's direction. How do you spread the rich cultural resources and benefits from the experiences of one planet (civilization) without corrupting others? How do you preclude the other civilizations from yearning for and pursuing the same experiences?

In the Universe's game there is only ONE way to do that. That "way" is to gain sufficient empirical evidence of the consequences of all related ERROR to demonstrate that such pursuits are a "dead end" and to develop TEACHERS capable of conveying this reality effectively through expressions of wisdom gained by their experience of the same pursuits. These teachers may then be spread throughout the Universe at the same time that the library is being shared, thereby enabling circumstances in which rewards of rich cultures can be shared in a manner that does not require the introduction of commensurate risks. Because of the effectiveness of these teachers, WISDOM is made available to civilizations (planets) that transcends the civilizations' experience while at the same precluding attraction to the experiences that produce suffering. This IS the only way to create civilizations with libraries grander than their own experience without jeopardizing their existing harmonies and/or evolution toward greater measures of the same.

Perhaps now some of you are staring to "see" the "Big Picture" relative to the Universe value of human beings and the value of earth as a planet. Upon traveling throughout the galaxy what do you think would be your reaction to come across a planet on which over 100 languages are spoken and the beings come in so many different sizes, shapes, and colors? You would likely think it outlandish and yet that is what you have here. But don't worry about it because there is no other planet with such diversity and certainly no other with such drama. Now, what does this have to do with how God feels about you. Well, God sees your value as represented by your POTENTIAL to the Universe and understands that the majority of you, as spiritual beings, are but several critical choices away from realizing that value and "ascending" accordingly to positions of great honor and respect. God also knows that while there is nothing "excusable" in temporal terms about the lives of the many villains and tyrants in your history, their lives have been necessary enablers of the life circumstances behind the size of your library and the breadth and depth of the books in it. Furthermore, whether you find more fault with the "oppressor" or the "terrorist", their appetites, religious beliefs, etc. are similar enablers and only their choice for an intimate relationship with God in these days stands between them and their opportunity to be among the Universe's great teachers and/or to be free to choose from other of the Universe's most rewarding, joyous experiences.

The critical thing for all such "characters" to understand now, however, gets back to my point about the Universe's response to their choices as a function of the information at their disposal. Whether we are talking about a "terrorist" or a crooked banker, people are afforded only so much time to cease practices that create suffering for others and to embrace the opportunity to choose God and thus the transformation of their being that is necessary to unlock their Universe value. The Universe knows exactly how much information people have, the logic for it being accepted or rejected, and the intellectual ability of people to make sensible choices. Though specific lines for specific people will not be revealed people will sense when their opportunities are on the verge of expiring and when they do expire "rules" (algorithms) will be triggered that begin escorting their "fragments" from this Universe. Various destructive choices will trigger the same walk.

Relative to the planet itself one of the greatest reasons why it would behoove people to choose God in these days is to preserve the opportunity/right to return here upon the planet being settled in "Light and Life". All experiences of harmonious planets with "imported" libraries are nice but there is no experience greater than that of harmony on a planet whose own history is the experiential source of its wisdom. Such a civilization is the "inheritance" of humanity, a reward for all that humans have endured and that your experiences have contributed to the wisdom of the Universe and all that you WILL, if you WILL it, contribute to the wisdom of God. For that contribution you have earned the opportunity to return here at your leisure at such time that the planet is home to the most sought after experience in all the Universe. To take advantage of this opportunity and to safeguard this extraordinary privilege you need only to make additional contributions to the building of "God's Kingdom" here as can only be made by CHOOSING God. The potential VALUE of the majority of human beings, the experiences that are available to you in the future, are as extraordinary as any that have ever been created in this Universe. This is as true of doctors, lawyers and bankers as it is of drug pushers and prostitutes. The ticket to the ride is yours.
